Schwinn Airdyne Bike (**** Out Of *****)

Since its production in the 1970’s, The Schwinn Airdyne bike has been one of the most consistently purchased recumbent bicycles on the market. With all of the high-tech exercise bicycles available, this is a curious phenomenon.

Why is Schwinn still able to sell this bicycle? It’s because the Schwinn Airdyne has one feature that is very attractive to stationary-bike enthusiasts and that is the fan resistance technology – if you can even call it technology. As you pedal, a large fan turns and as you pedal faster it becomes more difficult to pedal. In other words, the strength of your pedaling increases the resistance and gives you a better workout.

Additionally, as you pedal, the handlebars move and this allows you to work both your arms and legs to make the fan move. And if your legs start to feel fatigued you can use your hands and arms exclusively and give your legs a rest.

This feature makes the Schwinn Airdyne a very useful piece of equipment if you have a leg or arm injury because you can still work out on this bike using whichever extremity is not injured. Pushing both the handlebars and the pedals gives you an overall body workout that many standard exercise bikes cannot do.

By working your arms you will find that every muscle in your upper body benefits. Using both your arms and legs gives you a wonderful cardiovascular workout as well since your heart rate increases and your breathing deepens as you exercise.

It is also one of the sturdiest piece of equipments in the exercise arena. Every part of it is made to last. The bikes are never obsolete and no matter how hard you work them, they don’t disappoint.

Now with all the positives, there has to be a negative. It isn’t perfect but nothing is. The reason this bicycle is so durable is that it is built like a Hummer. It has wheels on it but it is very heavy and extremely hard to move. Another drawback is that it does make noise that might bother some people.

But I’ve got to say – try as I might, those are the only things I can say about the Schwinn Airdyne that would detract from its overall usefulness.

Bottom Line: It’s a classic, and with good reason.
