Along with air, the most essential element for survival is water. People have been known to survive for more than a month without food, but go without water for a day and you’re in dire straits. Quite simply, without water intake we will die.
About two-thirds of a man’s body weight and just over half of a woman’s body weight is water. Because women have a higher percentage of fat than men it is essential that they keep hydrated because fat contains less water than lean body tissue.
Medical researchers tell us that up to 75% of all adults suffer from mild or chronic dehydration and that it has seriously adverse effects on weight as well as general health. Obese people have a lower percentage of water than slim people. One of the simplest ways to shed some of those unwanted pounds is to drink more water.
Besides flushing your system, drinking water when you’re a little hungry displaces that empty feeling and gives you a little more mileage on you last meal. Some doctors believe that many people confuse that dehydrated thirst for hunger and eat when they actually need to drink water.
Exercise without proper hydration is a waste of time. You’ll struggle to lose an ounce if you exercise and diet without drinking at least seven or eight pints of water daily, particularly in hot weather!
Besides weight loss, water benefits us by:
- metabolizing fat more efficiently,
- aiding in digestion by extracting more of the nutrients from our food,
- regulating body temperature
- Lubricating joints- (by far the most important constituent at lubricating joints!)
- moisturizing our skin for a clean, healthy complexion
Sufficient water passing through the kidneys enables them to function at their maximum efficiency and has a major effect on the liver being able to get rid of toxins and waste.
Eight glasses of water a day has been proven to reduce the chances of contracting bladder and colon cancer, by about 45%. Next time you’re tempted to exchange shakes, soft drinks and other high calorie drinks for water, ask yourself, “How much weight do I feel like gaining in the next few minutes?”
Be aware that some low caloric drinks such as tea, coffee and diet drinks that contain caffeine that acts as a diuretic and that they can actually encourage your body to lose water. There’s no reason to go without them as long as you replace the loss by drinking at least the same amount of plain water very soon after you have enjoyed that cuppa or coke.
Keeping a bottle of water readily available is a good way to ensure your consumption when being active and hot weather has made you thirsty. And don’t let a little cold weather keep you from drinking enough water to keep the benefits going in the winter! Your body still needs the same amount regardless of the weather! Drinking water regularly helps us to stay fit, healthy and stay leaner.
