LifeSpan TR 500 Treadmill (*** Out Of *****)

The LifeSpan TR 500 is a smartly designed treadmill, fit for the consumer looking to do some walking or light jogging and willing to forego some of the optional add-ons for the sake of saving some money. But those looking for a high-performance treadmill that will hold up against more intense, rigorous training sessions may want to keep shopping.

First, the down side: The TR 500 is feels just a little underpowered, with a 1.75 CHP motor that really isn’t hearty enough for sustained or fast-paced running sessions. The belt is fairly short – just 52 inches long – and doesn’t really offer the kind of space you would like to have for more aggressive running and climbing workouts.

And, like other treadmills in its price range, it’s somewhat stripped down, without all of the fancy bells and whistles that some other higher end treadmills offer, like a sound system, mp3 dock or even a cooling fan. But there is a fair amount to like about the LifeSpan offering, as well.

The TR 500 comes equipped with a variety of pre-programmed workout regimens in order to keep your exercise time varied and interesting. The 14 built-in workouts include six incline routines, five speed training programs, two customized sessions and the “My Zone Heart Rate Control,” a nifty device that monitors your pulse and adjusts the speed and incline of your workout to keep your heart pumping at a targeted, sustained rate, great for an aerobic workout.

The construction and design are respectable, with the speed and incline controls neatly located conveniently on the handlebars, keeping them easily within reach while walking or running, allowing for a quick adjustment to the pace or incline without having to let go of the handlebars or even break stride.

The Lifespan TR 500’s steel-welded frame is built to accommodate an individual weighing up to 275 lbs. and folds away conveniently so minimize the space it takes up. The console is clear, simple and well-designed and the blue backlit display is easy to read.

The machine is also equipped with the EKG Pulse Grip System, which allows you to track your heart rate simply by holding onto the handlebars. Perhaps the most prominent consideration for those decideing whether to purchase the LifeSpan TR 500 is the value. It comes in at under $1,000 and fits in well with other treadmills in the price range.

It’s warranty, however, falls short of other treadmills in the same class. The bottom line: The LifeSpan TR 500’s smart design makes it worth checking out for the individual looking for a steady workout of walking and jogging and wanting to watch the wallet. As you might expect, for the price you’re going to go without some of the perks of the higher-end machines.

But for the more hard-core athlete who is looking to engage in more strenuous workouts with faster paced running with steeper climbs, the TR 500’s motor is underpowered and the belt area a little shorter than one would like.

Bottom Line: Not the fanciest treadmill ever created, but it’s a solid exercise machine.
